Ivo Balbaert Ivo Balbaert is currently a lecturer in (web) programming and databases at CVO Antwerpen (www.cvoantwerpen.be), a community college in Belgium. He received a PhD degree in applied physics from the University of Antwerp in 1986. He worked for 20 years in the software industry as a developer and consultant in several companies, and for 10 years as a project manager at the University Hospital of Antwerp. Here's 4 things I liked about the book followed by 2 things I didn't1. The author’s name looks foreign so I was concerned the book may suffer from a poor translation and/or bad grammar. That was not the case. The grammar was on par for a technical book and there weren’t many typos.2. The topics were presented in a logical order. When the author was forced to mention a topic that had yet to be covered, he referenced the upcoming chapter where it would be covered. This ensures the reader isn’t just left scratching their head.3. The author used Julia-v0.3 but would mention where he thought something would change in Julia-v0.4. When explaining slices be states that v0.3 provided a copy (by default) instead of a view of the original matrix but v0.4 would return views instead of copies. I tested this with versions v0.3.9 and v0.4.5 and I saw no difference in the default behavior. The author's comment spurred me to read the documentation and eventually I found the explanation (on their wiki). Spoiler, it didn't change in v0.4. The note in the book may have been incorrect but notes like that are very helpful when the language is still under development. Some comments about future releases are going to be wrong because development can change course over night.4. Each time I referenced the index, I found what I was looking for. ------- 2 Things I didn't like -----------1. So what's one reason not to buy this book or any other Julia book? The language is still under development. This book was published in 2015. I'm reading it in April 2016 and as I work through the examples I'm getting a LOT of deprecated syntax warnings (v0.4.6-pre) and as I pointed out above, some things the author said would be implemented in v.0,4, were not. If you go to the Julia website and click on Docs, you will see a well written and easy to read manual that's up-to-date (of course). You will notice the chapters of the online manual are similar to the ones in this, and other, books. The online documentation has all the information and it's kept up-to-date. Until Julia 1.0 is released, you probably won't do any better than reading the online Julia manual and searching their wiki for answers to your questions. The author used v0.3. I used the latest stable v0.4.6-pre to work the book's examples. At the time I wrote this review, the current version is v0.5.0.2. A couple places (for example the dictionary example section) give a lot of deprecated code warnings as you try the examples. Then several pages later, grouped in one small paragraph, the author lists examples of syntax, that's already been used extensively in the examples, that would be deprecated in v0.4 along with the new syntax. That information is NOT useful when tucked into a small paragraph several pages after you could have used it. That information should have been included in notes alongside the applicable examples earlier in the chapter.

When I learned about the Julia language I was thrilled that there is a community which wants to marry the simplicity and joy of coding in Python/R/Matlab with the power and speed of C/Fortran. This book is a rapid introduction into the basic structure, syntax, and building blocks of the Julia language. The book goes over data/collection types, functions, control flow, metaprogramming, and parallel programming in a first delievery approach. There also are comments and a few pages which provide programming tips on how to ensure top performance of your Julia code. My main criticism of this book is you won't find detailed examples highlighting what makes Julia superior, which is its multiple dispatch and use of LLVM-JIT compiler. There are also no examples related to technical computing (e.g. numerical algorithms) which I think is necessary to convince traditional user of Python/Matlab and C/Fortran to adapt Julia as part of their toolbox. Overall this is a nice quick introduction to a very promising language and is worth reading if you prefer not to start with the Julia manual.

A very informative, well written, book with good material about Julia. It is not for the beginning programmer, a lot is assumed.

What is Julia? Julia is a fairly new programming language (borne in 2012) that aims at reaching two objectives: 1) quick solution prototyping like in MATLAB, R or Python and 2) fast computational time and efficient memory management like in FORTRAN, C or C++. Thus, one could say that Julia tries to bridge the gap between programming languages of two types - high-level but slow and fast but low-level.As such, Julia is a primal competitor to MATLAB, R, and Python. However, competition does not completely exclude collaboration; this is the case for Julia that has packages for calling code written in these and some other languages like Java. Needless to say, Julia is open source and free with a liberal MIT license, which is important for wide adoption. To date, there are 549 external packages that can be found at http://pkg.julialang.org/ .Chapter 1 explains how to install Julia for Windows, Ubuntu and OS X, shows example of work in Julia shell, and lists IDEs like Juno that can be used. Chapter 2 describes Julia's types of variables (numbers, characters, strings, ranges, arrays) that are the key for its performance, while Chapter 3 discusses functions (their definition and types). Control flow operators (if, for, while, break, continue) and exception handling are introduced in Chapter 3. As the extensions of Chapter 2, Chapter 5 talks about matrices (multidimensional arrays), tuples, sets and dictionaries, while Chapter 6 goes into detail of type annotation and conversion, type hierarchy, abstract, parametric, and user-defined types. The concept of metaprogramming (which can even generate code) is explained in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 explores I/O (file reading from and writing to several formats such as CSV, JSON, XML, HDF5, DataFrames for tabular data representation), networking, interacting with databases, and parallel computing. How to call from within Julia the code written in another programming language like C, FORTRAN and Python as well as performance recommendations are explained in Chapter 9. Great guide book to Taiwan. This book gives you the ins and outs of traveling Taiwan without a tour group. Bus lines, train stations, ticketing info.... Very helpful. The book goes into detail about the main attractions in each region of the island and offers a generous background on the history of Taiwan. I compared this to another top-rated travel guide on Taiwan which I also purchased, and this one beats it hands down.

i buy a lot of rough guides and this one was just ok. either taipei doesn't have secret cool places or this guy wasn't giving them up. i loved taipei and it's outskirts and had a local show me around. so i was able to compare what the book said vs where my friend was taking me. for example in maokong has an area that you can stroll with restaurants and tea houses. he doesn't tell you about that. there is also a lovely park to the old tea farms that he doesn't share. that's just one area. i will be going back to taiwan. it's beautiful and friendly and a great time but i will try another book for my next trip.

This guy travels by public bus. There are no driving directions. Many descriptions lack details and I question that the authors even visited many of the sites in the book. Descriptions make Taiwan sound like a fantastic place to visit, but I found it quite underwhelming.

I bought this Taiwan Rough Guide for an upcoming two month visit to Taiwan -- which I knew well five decades (!) ago, but has obviously changed for the better in many ways. I'm impressed with what I've read and scanned through so far. There are more than 50 pages devoted to Taipei, chock full of good, capsule descriptions of museums, sites, walks, and restaurants. There are some -- not that many -- recommended places to stay, but I think today's savvy traveler has the best chance of finding what s/he wants by getting on line and spending a few hours searching for the area, the price, etc., comparing and contrasting, and weighing, previous traveler reviews. Without a guide I found what appears to be a great place (eight terrific recommendations and no naysayers), in a convenient neighborhood, and at a very reasonable price (albeit on a monthly basis). Getting back to the Rough Guide here, the author obviously has put a lot of heart into it and some sections are quite interesting and useful: quite a few pages on the "Taiwan Strait Islands," Taiwan religious information, and a very good political/historical rundown. Over 125 pages are devoted to down-island Taiwan, I haven't yet looked at this material, but if it is at the same standard, given the author's enthusiasm and obvious cultural and historical knowledge and sensitivity, this should be a great companion to any travel outside Taipei and the north. The information throughout appears quite fresh as of mid-2015. In several cases, the author said in a few words what I've heard from other knowledgeable visitors to Taiwan.

Excellent guide to Taiwan. A few out-of-date restaurants, (ie closed) but that's to be expected. And there are plenty of fabulous places to eat!

It is very nice book. It has a lot of information provided for you to read on. It is also a very organized book to read.

Beautifully written and organized. Full of the information that I am looking for and one of my favorite chapters is the translation of words and phrases that you will most likely use when traveling in Taiwan.

This is a terrific read. Greenhouse delivers an analytical and informed assessment of the state of journalism.One of the best books I have read all year.

JUST A JOURNALIST is a wonderful account of what it took for a woman to become a journalist in the 1970s. Linda Greenhouse's book is an especially good read in this moment of discovering forgotten women's stories,

I've been reading your articles about the supreme court and other things for years -- and they have always been somewhere between excellent and stellar! I got from the beginning to the end, with a bit of difficulty because YOU WEREN'T THERE. But it has your name on it. I just don't understand -- and I'm disappointed. Linda, I'm sorry, but I have to recommend that people save their money on this one -- it's just not happening'.

I am extremely disappointed that what was described as a hardcover "BOOK" was actually a paper back with a hard cover, seriously considering a return!

I hunted everywhere to find this item eventually found one on amazon, I was so excited to receive it, what a crushing let down, please do not think I am bad mouthing the vendor, their part of the transaction was just fine. My problem is with the quality of the item from the publisher. I have purchased this calendar for the last 4 years and been thrilled with it, This year it is a far inferior production, thin flimsy pages smaller than previous years and the holder is rediculous, is made from thin card and will not hold the pages nicely let alone stand up for display as it should. I will not be purchasing this again next year, they might have cut their costs but they have also cut their loyal following who purchase this year after year on blind trust becuase it is shrink wrapped and you can not see the contents until you have purchasedpoor quality product - not worth the money - would not purchase again

I have calendars like this and never get rid of them. There are lots of patterns and instructions.

This is the second quilting day to day calendar I've recieved. I was disappointed with the box this years came in. It is not very sturdy and will probably rip very easy. It's also smaller than last years. This is one of those item's that, if it isn't broke, don't fix it!. This isn't a calendar that will be thrown out at the end of the year. Please go back to the old STURDY packaging next year. However I do like the blocks inside. I look forward to making a few.

A Christmas gift

This calendar is whimsical and fun. Nice block and quilt ideas and directions. I bought one for myself and gave one to a quilting buddy. She liked it also.

I just received this calendar and am extremely disappointed. The calendar size is reduced by a third, the holder is flimsy, and, I feel, the designs are tasteless. I loved the 2010 calendar, but will look for something else to see and enjoy every day.

My wife is very happy with this day calendar full of ideas for her quilting craft, & its a great addition to her craft room.

The calendar was received so quickly -- it seemed like it came in 2 days! Would definitely order from the source again.
