To me the heyday of MTV was when it played videos around the clock, and this book is chock full of behind the scenes info of many singers who were hot and happening then (and in some cases even still very popular now) like Madonna, Heart, Robert Palmer, A-Ha, Michael Jackson, and many more. If you love the 80's or you want to know about what MTV was like back in the day or you just like reading entertaining books...get this book. As someone who was an 80's child, I can tell you that this book was well worth the money. The pages flew by, and I wouldn't hesitate to read this again some day.

I've seen others online mention that "I Want My MTV" is more a history of the music video than the story of MTV itself. That's a fair assessment as there are long stretches of the book where the discussion is entirely focused on the music videos and artists themselves with any connection to MTV being tangential at best.Having said that, this book is FANTASTIC. There are so many great stories in here that the book is really hard to put down. If you're a child of the music video era like I am, this is a must-read. My family got MTV very early in 1982 and for a few years after, it served as a de facto radio station for our house. It was pretty much always on. So this book and the videos discussed really connected with me.It's worth noting, as others have, that a lot of the stories deal with sex and drugs and have a very tabloid-y feel. Given the "Uncensored" part of the title and the general subject (rock & roll), that should not surprise you. Occasionally it feels like the author dove a little too deep into that type of story but it never really goes overboard.Bottom line: Buy the book, you won't be sorry.

This book covers MTV from the beginning to the end of the era of music videos roughly around 1994. I enjoyed reading all the inside information. I watched the 1st video live and saw the network grow over the years.I am one of those that miss the music videos on MTV. The book explores the transition to reality programming (Real World). Well written and immersive.Highly recommended.

This book can appeal to baby boomers as well as the intelligent youth who want to learn abut the history giant that was/is MTV. It is a fascinating look behind the curtains about the origins of MTV and music videos. Some of us remember when MTV was truly Music Video Television. We loved our music. It was exciting to see the bands without going to a concert. Fans got an insight into bands, Singers and the images they projected. The book is put together in a format that allows the reader to pick up and put down at any time without losing the story. Hence, it is easy for a non-reader to enjoy this book. At the end, older readers who watched MTV will be saddened about its demise as a source of music entertainment.

My favorite memory of family vacations was being glued to MTV, as my parents were too cheap to buy cable. if you have a similar MTV-related memory, you are guaranteed to be glued to this book.It reads like "Live from New York" and "The War for Late Night" and is equally addictive. It focuses purely on MTV's 1981-1993 music video era. A looong read, yet my only beef is that I didn't want it to end.Wish there were more said on Beavis & Butthead, MTV rivals like The Box, MTV2, and post 1993 MTV - but this still qualifies as the definitive MTV guide. Get it, you'll love it. Skip a couple chapters on 80's metal videos like I did.

This is the book that everyone and anyone who grew up in the 80s and had MTV in their house should own. Over 600 pages of the inside gems of MTV with the rise and fall of the one cable concept that was worth all of our time. Viacom destroyed the channel as did the decision to kill off a good thing at its peak. The way it all went down was as shocking and disturbing as I expected it to be...this just confirmed it.A must own.

After reading "I Want My MTV", I must say that I am profoundly embarrassed over my musical choices. The videos of the early eighties influenced me to listen to crappy music. The chapters concerning Madonna and poor Billy Squire were not surprising, but incredibly insightful. The book does a fantastic job of illustrating why MTV was successful, why certain videos were shown over and over again and why the cable station had to abandon their original format of playing videos. The book was particularly harsh to Downtown Judy Brown, but I enjoyed her antics. Buy this book. 587 pages was not enough.

Great read for anyone who is a child of the 80s MTV generation. Great insight and insider info. behind the scenes on the whole music video revolution that was MTV. Wish MTV would have stayed the same as it was back then instead of turning into a reality network but that is not applicable here.

I found this book to be an easy, quick read with a good amount of helpful information. I bought this book to prepare me for my first trip to China. I learned quite a bit of general attitude differences between U.S. and China, as well as very specific suggestions for behavior in China. I lived and worked in Asia for 4 years, based in Hong Kong, mainly involved in corporate acquisitions throughout the region. As a first timer, I certainly would have benefited from the author's insightful perspectives in relation to Chinese cultures and customs. The author, like me, learnt a lot very quickly, but he had the motivation to write a very useful and simple to read self-help guide. His humourous recollections are quite valid. For we "guilos", some strange but enriching experiences are delightfully explained. Perhaps a few more pictorials to illustrate would be helpful. I highly recommend this book for first time visitors to China and, indeed, those like myself who have been there before, but never fully comprehended many of the cultural nuances.

I initially read the book in under an hour, found it entertaining and humorous, but at the same time very informative. During my first week in Shanghai I found myself referring to sections of the guide and smiling to myself as many of the quirks described in the book came true. Like other reviewers I found that this guide helped me keep calm, cool and collected in situations that I found down right confusing!A must buy for anyone looking to travel to China whether on holiday or business!

Having been to China for both business and personal time I wish I had this book first. My first trip was for business. I read this easy book Doing Business in China: Learn How To Effectively Negotiate With The Chinese and it proved helpful for a newbie doing business in China. Later on I have been to China several times over the years and the culture shock is still there. I wish I had read Easy Etiquette in China first. I can tell you though that the author is spot on with his observations! There are so many customs we as Westerners take for granted that are compltetly different in China. Business is done differently... Meeting, greeting and dining are different. The scariest for me personally though has to be the traffic where pedestrians have no right of way, and the lines on the streets (and even the stop signs) are merely for decoration.China is changing so fast, especially in the urban areas. Both the landscape and the culture are in flux. On the one hand it's nice to see China catching up with the rest of the world, but with that rapid change comes some loss of the old culture. The author has an entire chapter on this (Winds of Change).Overall a really good read and wealth of information you'll want if you're going to visit China.

I have to confess that I bought my copy a couple years ago before it arrived at Amazon hoever I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience.The author wrote this guide based upon his own experiences. He notes that during the first 6-9 months that he lived in China he was both frustrated and disappointed due to a combination of the enormous number of differences that confronted him [and his family] daily and to his own lack of objectivity when it came to assessing some everyday situations. For these reasons he eventually decided to put pen to paper.This is an easy guide to read [I read it in one session the first time] complete with personal anecdotes, good practical advice, and quite simply it is very entertaining too.Highly recommended by me.

This novella, Virgins, is yet another mini installment in the "behind the story" story that she presents to us in an attempt to give us a glimpse into events that were spoken of but never really explored fully in her book series. Everyone that loves Outlander and her other books LOVES Jamie Fraser and can't get enough of these mini stories to keep us going between books. This is definitely NOT a stand alone story and you wouldn't have a clue as to what was going on if you didn't read the Outlander series, or at the very least, the first book itself.Ian and Jamie are young in this story, Jamie just having escaped from confinement in an English prison. He has just encountered his nemesis, Black Jack, for the first time and is lucky to be alive. Ian is traveling with a band of mercenaries and Jamie hopes to join them in the hopes of staying clear of Scotland and staying close to the one man he trusts like a brother. What I liked about this is that Jamie is very young here and we have had little exposure to him at that age. He is a naïve boy who has just suffered extreme punishment and lost his father and homeland quite suddenly. He's trying to fit in among these seasoned men in France and he is just learning the ropes. I almost feel like a fly on the wall! That is where our story begins, and I doubt you will be disappointed. Hold on to your kilt!It took me about 3 hours this morning to finish, in between a few phone calls and laundry. It's a great prelude to the second season of Outlander beginning on STARZ tomorrow! Now I REALLY can't wait!

Outlander is a series of novels that follow the lives of Claire, a WWII combat nurse who travels back in time to the 1740s, and her second husband, James Fraser, a Scottish laird. These books can't really be classified by genre, since they include history, drama, adventure, romance, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy . . . a little of everything, really.For those who are desperate for a Jamie and Claire fix, this should help ease the withdrawal pangs until the next (ninth) book comes out. Like some of the other short stories Diana Gabaldon has written, it fills in one of the gaps in the main characters' lives, exploring a period that we knew little about. It's longer than your typical short story, but nowhere near novel-length---especially a Diana Gabaldon novel! It's called a novella, which is either a very short novel or a very long short story. Either way, it doesn't take long to read.The story takes place shortly after Jamie escapes from Fort William, after being flogged (twice) by Black Jack Randall. Forced to flee Scotland because of the price on his head, Jamie goes to France, where he joins his best friend Ian as a mercenary-for-hire. After proving their worth as braw fighters, they're asked to escort a young Jewish bride and her priceless dowry to her husband-to-be in another part of the country, but as always, where James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser goes, trouble always follows.For those familiar with the Outlander series, you probably won't be surprised to learn that there is a rather graphic rape scene in this story. Every one of the books contains at least one sexual assault, and this short story is no exception. Interestingly, the scene in question is one that's mentioned in "Outlander" by Jamie on his wedding night to Claire. It's a throwaway line, something he says in passing, but the author clearly remembered and decided to expand upon it. It helps tie this story to the main series. Not that I couldn't have lived without the rape scene, but if it has to be there, at least it's connected. And it has an impact on the characters, so t's not gratuitous; it has a purpose, which makes it easier to bear.The only real flaw in this story is that Claire is missing. But since it takes place long before Jamie meets her, it's forgivable. Four stars and recommended to anyone who loves the Outlander series.

I was a late-comer to the Outlander series having not read the first novel, 'Outlander,' until mid-2014. Once started however, I read the existing books in the series in rapid succession and then waited breathlessly for 'Written in My Own Heart's Blood.' I wish I could say that each successive book was as perfect as 'Outlander,' but that is not the case. I still enjoyed each reading experience, but not as much as my 'first time.' Which brings me now to 'Virgins,' a novella of Jamie and Ian as mercenaries.'Virgins' reminds me of why I fell in love with Jamie and the whole Outlander universe. From the opening scene to the last word, the reader is treated to Jamie's courage, strength and heart, all firmly in place and well developed pre-Claire. Diana Gabaldon lets us inside Jamie's deep mourning and wracking guilt over the death of his father as well as his on-going worry over his sister, Jenny, in the wake of Black Jack Randall's mayhem. We see Ian as a whole, strong man as well as the dynamic of his relationship to Jamie in a way we've never seen it before. What 'Virgins' does is that it gives us another dimension to both characters that makes them, if possible, even more compelling.Bottom line: it's a solid read. Don't be put off, if you've read the main series, by thinking that this short story can't add anything to an already richly tapestried world. What you'll read is the glorious mix of heart breaking pathos, laugh-out-loud humor, and action that is vintage Diana Gabaldon. Read it. You won't be sorry.

Terrific, as always. Really the hardest part about this series is waiting for the new releases. Every four months I get excited to collect the latest volume, and volume 23 is no exception. It moves in a very different direction that uncovers a lot of mysteries from an unprecedented perspective. This series probably has the best storyline I've ever come across.

my grandaughter loved this book so that makes me happy.

This volume grants further development into the ongoing story line of the world outside the walls. It also grants credence to a character that largely acts as the villain while pushing through a few revelations. There is much needed character development in this particular volume that only makes this conflict that much more engaging and heart wrenching at the same time. I am too excited for the next volume to release.

Great series, competitive price but stop reading around episode 15 or 16 if you don't want spoilers for the third season of the anime
