It is setup like a diary, though unlike Recovery Road it has pictures, and each would be chapter is short. However, with a movie coming up this August, starring Amandla Stenberg and Anika Noni Rose, you know I couldn’t resist. Though, let me tell you, this is by no means the best YA novel I’ve ever read.Characters & StorylineSince she was a baby, Madeline hasn’t left her house. Her mother, a doctor, has diagnosed her with SCIDs (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency) after her getting gravely ill as a baby. What this basically does is turn her into a bubble child (Think Jake Gyllenhaal’s Bubby Boy). Which, if you saw the movie, you’ll remember means a lot of remodeling of the family home in order to accommodate the disease. So, with some money Maddy’s mom came into, she is able to redo the house to keep Maddy healthy.Thus leading to, for more than 15 some odd years, the only people Maddy interacting with being her mom and nurse Carla. However, then comes Olly, a boy who moves in next door. His curiosity, his being new to the area, draws him to the cute girl who just watches people from the window. So, thanks to a bit of perseverance, and Maddy’s own curiosity, they become friends and so blooms the desire to become something more. But is that possible when Maddy can’t do things normal girls do? Will Olly, considering his family situation, as well as the ability to meet tons of girls at school, really give him the time to deal with the frustration which is having to adjust his life to meet the requirements of what he needs to do just to see Maddy? Well…HighlightsMaddy and Olly’s Relationship Is AdorableNo matter what the YA novel is, pretty much it is the relationships and/or the friendships, that keep you interested. After all, once you take into account how isolated Maddy has been, and this is probably one of the few boys her age she has had the chance to interact with, it makes you a bit nostalgic.This is, of course, assuming you are my age, nearly a decade away from Maddy’s, and reading her talk about the butterflies and how being within a couple of feet from someone you are into makes the hairs on your arms stand. All of it, truly, reminds you of what it was like to be young and have a full-fledged, it could happen, type of crush. The kind you dream about and so much more.It’s Not Too Heavy or SensationalizedI think I’m not alone in saying that the YA novel genre has become saturated with drug addiction, accidental deaths, various kinds of abuse, and with that it makes books which don’t include that seem tame. Heck, they seem boring in comparison. For, after all, books are about escapism, going into someone else’s world, usually more interesting than yours, and getting away. Yet, at the same time, books are also about finding someone, or something, to relate to, despite your difference.Maddy’s life is bare. She has her mom, Carla, and a computer she strangely only does school work on. Even when Olly enters her life, there is nothing sensationalized about their relationship. He isn’t some bad boy she is trying to save nor is he just some curious dude who is bored.In a lot of ways, Everything, Everything reminds you that storytelling, and coming of age, isn’t just about having sex for the first time, your first drink, your first smoke, or what often are considered things that adults do. It’s about experiencing life with the only influence your parents having is how they live by example and you deciding what to, or not to, take from that. Which includes how you handle being offered sex, drugs, and etc., as well as how you handle tragedy, how you are as a friend or partner when that other person is hurting and more.Overall: Mixed (Borrow)While I really have nothing but praise for Everything, Everything here is the thing. It’s not for everyone. This book isn’t about escapism but providing perhaps a character to relate to. Hence why Maddy is Black and Asian, just like Nicola Yoon’s children will be. This book, in a way, is about breaking the mold, not giving in to the need for sudden shocks and the usual beliefs of what teens get themselves, and each other, into. This book is for those who may have issues with their parents, maybe never been kissed, but nonetheless are completely normal. With that, as much as the book has quotable lines up the ying yang, it doesn’t really bring me to say you should buy it nor can I strongly recommend it. It’s a quick read which won’t be taxing on your time and emotions but with it just being cute, even with Maddy’s diagnosis, it doesn’t come up with ways to make you wanna read this over and over again. As much as we get to know Maddy and Olly, as well as their friends and family, they don’t leave a strong impression for they are so normal that, minus or plus one or two things, you probably already know someone like them.Hence the Mixed (Borrow) label for while those prepping for the movie I think may enjoy the insight, and surely will look forward to certain moments in the movie, I think on its own Everything, Everything may do things differently, but not in such a way it becomes exemplary.

I have read many books in my 23 years of life. And I am those type of people who fall head over heels in love with certain books. This is one of them. The writing is beautiful, you fall in love with the characters in this book and honestly, I just could not put this book down. Throughout my day I could not wait until I reunited with this story,You have to read this book, it will definitely change the way you see and appreciate things.

I will be honest, I read this book start to finish in one day. There were parts where I just couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to know what would happen. I really enjoyed reading the storyline and getting to know Olly and Maddy. I definitely wish that when I was 18 years old I knew a boy like Olly! Although I have to say that is one criticism that I have of this book, I don’t believe that boy’s like Olly actually exist at the age of 18 years old! He was so sweet, thoughtful, sure of himself and his love for Maddy, and very mature. So I struggled to read the book and relate to a world in which a character like Olly would exist.Other than that I loved the storyline and the author’s writing. Maddy was funny and quirky and relatable. I did wonder which direction the story would go, I wouldn’t say it was predictable, but I wasn’t sure whether it would have a happy or sad ending. There seemed to be only two ways for the book to end. And I will say that when I read the last part of the book I was actually disappointed there wasn’t more to the story of Olly and Maddy. I was left wanting more!Definitely worth reading if you like sweet YA love stories.

Okay, where do I start....Well, this is certainly an idea I haven't thought of! The author went through a lot of research, so it was very informative about the protagonist's condition. The protagonist herself is fairly relatable, as well. I liked the book for the most part. However....I thought it was strange how she had so much trouble forgiving her mom, at the end of the book. Of course I didn't expect her to forgive her mother right away, and of course her feelings are justified. She was, after all, kept in her house her entire life, hardly any friends to speak of, and only the occasional visit from anybody but her mother and nurse. That said, that's why I find it hard to believe. Her mother was in the wrong here, but she was also delusional. I figured the protagonist would be slightly more understand when she realized that her mother was having trouble coming to terms with life, and that she was trying to protect her daughter. I figured that the protagonist, only knowing a handful of people in her life, would eventually have forgiven her mother for the sheer fact that her mother is one of the only people she could rely on until she met her boyfriend. Honestly, the fact that it ended how it did, with her feeling how she does about her mother, was disappointing.And why wasn't she angrier at her nurse? The nurse specifically stated that she did not know for certain if the protagonist had SCID or not, that occasionally she had doubts about it and about the mother. Why wasn't the protagonist angrier at her for not trying to find out more? Or at least for not telling her?Overall, the book was okay. I might read it again, but it won't be for a while yet, because for some reason it just bothers me for the above two reasons.

I started reading this book as a reluctant reader, having so many books on my bucket list to read and never wanting to waste my time spending an hour reading something that doesn’t enrich, educate, inspire. Having a preconceived notion about any book I begin to read, this one was no different. Having said that, I’ll start by saying what this book is not: it’s not a casual read about the coming of age of women in a man’s world, or another tale of rags-to-riches. It’s not another story about someone behind the 8 ball who is given a second chance at life. This story will beggar your imagination in an attempt to wrap your mind around how a human being in the 20th century could possibly treat her children the way she did, and how those children could possibly withstand the deprivation and degradation that they were exposed to. I constantly had to remind myself that this was taking place in American and in and around the same neighborhoods I grew up in. I was literally brought to tears to see how these sisters and their brother continually elevated their sibling relationship by loving each other on increasing levels that made me realize what my own sibling relationships had entirely lacked. It revealed with clarity the importance of the teacher in our society, and the now almost extinct neighbor-to-neighbor relationship. If you are a teacher, you need to read this book to renew your acquaintance with the power you have in your sphere of influence. If you are a parent, your parenting will change for the better – no doubt. If you are a social worker, for god sakes, please read this book. In fact, my suggestion to any and all social work courses and degree programs – make this a mandatory read! The images that I have in my head from reading this book will never go away. This book has so many cogent lessons to teach, so many words of wisdom to inspire….in short, it will change the way you think about children, parents, government bureaucracies, school, neighbors, and the American culture in general.

I hate writing reviews. When I read what others have put I get angry when they tell me what the book is about. I know that already from reading what a back cover would say. Others tell me what the ending of the book is. That I really hate, there is no longer a reason for me to read the book.That being said I do feel compelled to leave a review of this book. Those of us who live in warm houses, cool houses in the summer, have our bellies full of food need to read this book. I think it is important to learn about another way of life that is happening to children in our society that we overlook or maybe hope doesn't exist at all. We need to know how they fall through the cracks so that changes can be made to stop and take a good look at abused and abandoned children and find a better system to help them.Books like this can read like a novel. I have to keep reminding myself this is REAL. This is someone's day to day existence. Someone's review said it was "too depressing to read". Considering what the book is about what were they expecting, lollipops and roses?I liked the book for it opened my eyes, it made me think and be grateful for the life (and childhood) that I have had. It told me of the powerful will to survive and the importance of family.I give immense kudos to the author for telling the story. The ending of the journey you will have read yourself!

This is the true story of how five children tried to band together to cover up the abuse of their mother, provide for their basic needs in a way that Social Services wouldn't become aware of and just be able to remain together so that they could protect one another.The story openly shows how the Social Services system fails children but how perserverence, some adults to provide foster care or just believe in your capabilities can enable you to succeed when everything is against you. You don't have to continue the cycle but it does take some caring individuals to help you find your way out. Some of the emotional scars can heal but others do seem to hang on to the point where the feeling might be scabbed over but you are always going to protect that area since you fear the scab could be ripped off so easily.As an educator, I have been frustrated by some of the responses that we receive from Social Services and I am very aware of the high needs, the lack of funding, and the small pay the workers get for trying to protect our most precious resource.Regina has written an eye opening, well written memoir which more people should put on their "to read" list.

This was a book that was hard to put down. Regina Calcaterra narrates the horror or growing up with her 4 siblings pretty much on their own on Long Island. Their mother was a drunk and mostly absent for months. The older kids would steal food just to stay alive. They were terrified of the "system" so they would lie about their mother being at work when the social worker would visit. When you read this book, your troubles will suddenly seem very small when you learn what it took for these children to stay safe and alive. Regina is now a very successful lawyer in New York, which is amazing after all she endured, many times being beaten so badly, verbally and mentally abused constantly. Full of suspense, shock, and wonder at how these children survived, this book is not something you will want to stop reading.

I am so thankful to you and your siblings, Regina Calcaterra! To read about the atrocities of your childhood, in the manner you penned them, brought a new awareness of just how many others there could be that are so painfully hurting at the hands of those who are supposed to love and care for them forever. I work in the public schools, and know that God placed me there so I too, can make a positive difference. This memoir will be ever etched in my heart as I keep my eyes, ears, and heart opened to every child I come in contact with.

To me the heyday of MTV was when it played videos around the clock, and this book is chock full of behind the scenes info of many singers who were hot and happening then (and in some cases even still very popular now) like Madonna, Heart, Robert Palmer, A-Ha, Michael Jackson, and many more. If you love the 80's or you want to know about what MTV was like back in the day or you just like reading entertaining books...get this book. As someone who was an 80's child, I can tell you that this book was well worth the money. The pages flew by, and I wouldn't hesitate to read this again some day.

I've seen others online mention that "I Want My MTV" is more a history of the music video than the story of MTV itself. That's a fair assessment as there are long stretches of the book where the discussion is entirely focused on the music videos and artists themselves with any connection to MTV being tangential at best.Having said that, this book is FANTASTIC. There are so many great stories in here that the book is really hard to put down. If you're a child of the music video era like I am, this is a must-read. My family got MTV very early in 1982 and for a few years after, it served as a de facto radio station for our house. It was pretty much always on. So this book and the videos discussed really connected with me.It's worth noting, as others have, that a lot of the stories deal with sex and drugs and have a very tabloid-y feel. Given the "Uncensored" part of the title and the general subject (rock & roll), that should not surprise you. Occasionally it feels like the author dove a little too deep into that type of story but it never really goes overboard.Bottom line: Buy the book, you won't be sorry.

This book covers MTV from the beginning to the end of the era of music videos roughly around 1994. I enjoyed reading all the inside information. I watched the 1st video live and saw the network grow over the years.I am one of those that miss the music videos on MTV. The book explores the transition to reality programming (Real World). Well written and immersive.Highly recommended.

This book can appeal to baby boomers as well as the intelligent youth who want to learn abut the history giant that was/is MTV. It is a fascinating look behind the curtains about the origins of MTV and music videos. Some of us remember when MTV was truly Music Video Television. We loved our music. It was exciting to see the bands without going to a concert. Fans got an insight into bands, Singers and the images they projected. The book is put together in a format that allows the reader to pick up and put down at any time without losing the story. Hence, it is easy for a non-reader to enjoy this book. At the end, older readers who watched MTV will be saddened about its demise as a source of music entertainment.

My favorite memory of family vacations was being glued to MTV, as my parents were too cheap to buy cable. if you have a similar MTV-related memory, you are guaranteed to be glued to this book.It reads like "Live from New York" and "The War for Late Night" and is equally addictive. It focuses purely on MTV's 1981-1993 music video era. A looong read, yet my only beef is that I didn't want it to end.Wish there were more said on Beavis & Butthead, MTV rivals like The Box, MTV2, and post 1993 MTV - but this still qualifies as the definitive MTV guide. Get it, you'll love it. Skip a couple chapters on 80's metal videos like I did.

This is the book that everyone and anyone who grew up in the 80s and had MTV in their house should own. Over 600 pages of the inside gems of MTV with the rise and fall of the one cable concept that was worth all of our time. Viacom destroyed the channel as did the decision to kill off a good thing at its peak. The way it all went down was as shocking and disturbing as I expected it to be...this just confirmed it.A must own.

After reading "I Want My MTV", I must say that I am profoundly embarrassed over my musical choices. The videos of the early eighties influenced me to listen to crappy music. The chapters concerning Madonna and poor Billy Squire were not surprising, but incredibly insightful. The book does a fantastic job of illustrating why MTV was successful, why certain videos were shown over and over again and why the cable station had to abandon their original format of playing videos. The book was particularly harsh to Downtown Judy Brown, but I enjoyed her antics. Buy this book. 587 pages was not enough.

Great read for anyone who is a child of the 80s MTV generation. Great insight and insider info. behind the scenes on the whole music video revolution that was MTV. Wish MTV would have stayed the same as it was back then instead of turning into a reality network but that is not applicable here.

I found this book to be an easy, quick read with a good amount of helpful information. I bought this book to prepare me for my first trip to China. I learned quite a bit of general attitude differences between U.S. and China, as well as very specific suggestions for behavior in China. I checked a good amount of the details with friends of mine who are from China, and they confirmed the veracity of these suggestions from the book.

I lived and worked in Asia for 4 years, based in Hong Kong, mainly involved in corporate acquisitions throughout the region. As a first timer, I certainly would have benefited from the author's insightful perspectives in relation to Chinese cultures and customs. The author, like me, learnt a lot very quickly, but he had the motivation to write a very useful and simple to read self-help guide. His humourous recollections are quite valid. For we "guilos", some strange but enriching experiences are delightfully explained. Perhaps a few more pictorials to illustrate would be helpful. I highly recommend this book for first time visitors to China and, indeed, those like myself who have been there before, but never fully comprehended many of the cultural nuances.

I purchased this book prior to my first trip to China and I'm extremely thankful for it!This easy-to-read, helpful and honest account of the authors experiences whilst living in China was great to get me prepared for my first work-related trip. I initially read the book in under an hour, found it entertaining and humorous, but at the same time very informative. During my first week in Shanghai I found myself referring to sections of the guide and smiling to myself as many of the quirks described in the book came true. Like other reviewers I found that this guide helped me keep calm, cool and collected in situations that I found down right confusing!A must buy for anyone looking to travel to China whether on holiday or business!

I have been to China many times, so this is just a refresher, but I did enjoy the book. Truly, the tips were useful and perhaps more useful since I have been back many times

Having been to China for both business and personal time I wish I had this book first. My first trip was for business. I read this easy book Doing Business in China: Learn How To Effectively Negotiate With The Chinese and it proved helpful for a newbie doing business in China. Later on I have been to China several times over the years and the culture shock is still there. I wish I had read Easy Etiquette in China first. I can tell you though that the author is spot on with his observations! There are so many customs we as Westerners take for granted that are compltetly different in China. Business is done differently... Meeting, greeting and dining are different. The scariest for me personally though has to be the traffic where pedestrians have no right of way, and the lines on the streets (and even the stop signs) are merely for decoration.China is changing so fast, especially in the urban areas. Both the landscape and the culture are in flux. On the one hand it's nice to see China catching up with the rest of the world, but with that rapid change comes some loss of the old culture. The author has an entire chapter on this (Winds of Change).Overall a really good read and wealth of information you'll want if you're going to visit China.

I have to confess that I bought my copy a couple years ago before it arrived at Amazon hoever I am delighted that it will now be available to a wider audience.The author wrote this guide based upon his own experiences. He notes that during the first 6-9 months that he lived in China he was both frustrated and disappointed due to a combination of the enormous number of differences that confronted him [and his family] daily and to his own lack of objectivity when it came to assessing some everyday situations. For these reasons he eventually decided to put pen to paper.This is an easy guide to read [I read it in one session the first time] complete with personal anecdotes, good practical advice, and quite simply it is very entertaining too.Highly recommended by me.
