I was disappointed in that I was hoping to get another World Reference Atlas out by DK in 1998, which I don't think they've ever redone.That provided very detailed information re: stats of MANY topics presented in small colorful bar graphs, as well as other detailed information.This is still a really nice book, though, and the maps are detailed, which I like. I wish DK would print an updated version of the old books I still have, because nothing I've found compares to it, but this is still a really nice world atlas and would recommend it. Too bad that more pages aren't shown within the book to give you a better idea of what you are buying, though.

Book is too large yet the print is micro size if you don't have 20/20 vision don't get this!!! Very dissapointed!!!

Great quality and value!

I bought this same atlas in 2002 and it was really awesome. Now this new edition really disappointed me. There are not even information about the countries and the regions, as in the old ones. No satellite maps? That is so bad! Definitely I'm going to return it. DK does not make good books anymore.

This is a sensitive, eye-opening memoir of a young Jewish girl's survival during WWII in Poland. Her memory of how it was to be without a family and without an identity during these formative years of her life takes the reader into a child's life of loss and hardship. The book is a "must-read" as far as I'm concerned, and is also appropriate for tweens and teens. I'm going to donate my copy to my granddaughter's middle school library.

Wonderful memoir that details Miriam's life during and after WWII.

Good book. Gives a different view of people's experiences during the war. So many stories to be told. Never to be forgotten by those who suffered. Wonderful that she managed to survive and have a good life. Also to be so understanding of her saviour.

A real story of honesty strength and perseverance

This is a kind of different Holocaust memoir. Many Jewish people who were rescued by Gentiles during World War II depict their rescuers as wonderful, saintly people. And in most cases they're correct; I mean, the rescuers were risking more than just their lives to save people that in some cases they didn't even know. It takes a special kind of moral courage to do something like that, and until you're in that situation yourself you never know whether or not you have it. I hope I would have had what it took to rescue a Jew during the Holocaust, but I'll never know for sure.Miriam Winter was an eight-year-old child in Poland when her parents managed to smuggle her out of the ghetto. A Jewish woman named Cesia, who was twenty and could pass for a Gentile, agreed to take her when she herself left the ghetto. But Cesia really didn't know what to do with Miriam afterwards; she wasn't in a position to keep her, and Miriam looked very Jewish. Fortunately they sort of randomly met a woman named Maryla on the train, and after hearing Cesia's made-up story about how Miriam was her sister's child whom she'd gotten stuck with, Maryla said she'd take care of her.Maryla, who was from Lwow and made a living smuggling black-market items, took Miriam knowing she was Jewish. She risked her life by doing so, and she inconvenienced herself a great deal. She left Miriam in the care of others for months of a time, but ultimately her Jewishness would always be discovered and Maryla would have to find a new place for her. Miriam wasn't well-treated by the people she stayed with, and Maryla never showed her any affection.After Lwow was liberated, Maryla wouldn't let Miriam attend school and made he work instead, at first selling black-market goods. After Maryla got married, she and her husband operated a store and Miriam had to work there. She was beaten and called a "filthy Jew" if she did anything wrong, and Maryla showed more affection to her dog. Some people tasked with finding Jewish war orphans visited the house, and Maryla told Miriam, "After everything I did for you, you will betray me like the Christ-killers betrayed Christ. Don't go with them." So Miriam stayed, until Maryla's husband's sister came to help at the store and they didn't need her work anymore. Then she left. She was fifteen.Much later, though, Miriam thought kindly of her guardian: "Harsh, even austere toward me, Maryla didn't spare herself either...once she took me she courageously cared for me; she risked her life for me, and she didn't give me up." Miriam was the only survivor of her family. She eventually told Yad Vashem about her rescuer and in 1994, Maryla was honored as Righteous Among the Nations.Anyway...this isn't so much a review as a plot summary I guess. This book is a different perspective on things, showing another side to the rescuers. And the ambivalent relationship the rescuer and the rescued can have with one another.

This is an exquisite book. Be forewarned that, once you have boarded the train with Miriam Winter, you will find yourself up late at night, way past your usual bedtime, speeding through a few more pages, another chapter. You will find yourself stealthily snatching a few moments in the middle of the afternoon to read just a little bit further. In other words, embark on this journey at your own risk and, in the words of Joni Mitchell ("A Case of You"), be prepared to bleed.I am not a novice at this sort of thing. I have read survivor memoirs and testimonies and interviewed child survivors over the past decade. And yet, Trains affected me profoundly. Particularly in the case of child survivors, early memories are often somatic, locked in the body and often inaccessible. It is difficult to retrieve and articulate such memories. Miriam Winter has managed to do this. She was eight years old when her parents placed her hiding. Through times of hunger, cold, and cruelty visited by those on whom she depended, what she longed for most was the remembered, gentle touch of her parents and grandparents. As an author, she maintains a gentle touch. She maintains a sense of grace. She maintains a sense of monumental but quiet courage.

A Story Born in VeneziaI moved to Italy in June 2015. I still spend a lot of time in Canada every year, but the bulk of the past 19 months has been spent in Venice and in a little village in the Italian Alps called Magras. As a writer, if you spend enough time in one place, some incarnation of it will find its way into your stories. Even with its problems (there are big issues with cruise ships and the sheer volume of visitors leaving a damaging footprint on Venice's fragile ecology), the spires and towers of Venezia imprinted on my heart in a way few cities can, and no surprise. The places Saxony's story unfolds are real, they are places that I saw with my own eyes and which still materialize around me when I close my eyes. Venice had a torrid relationship with fire for many years. In spite of being built on a lagoon and surrounded by water, Venezia is actually incredibly flammable, and suffered from several great fires which destroyed whole boroughs. These fires were the reason the world-famous glass-blowers were eventually moved entirely to the northern island of Murano-to keep their dangerous ovens away from the brick constructions. Venice's beautiful churches, museums, and massive heritage villas were built not from the stone they appear to made from (those are actually facades), but rather with lighter and more flammable materials, in order to prevent sinking. This learning inspired me to combine fire with Venice and weave them together in a magical way for an audience who loves urban fantasy and stories of transformation. My main character, Saxony, is just like any regular highschool girl, but her summer spent in Venice changes the course of her life forever as she becomes essentially a goddess. AL Knorr's Elemental Origins novels have been a true pleasure. One if the reasons for this is how the author immerses her readers in the experience and locales of her stories. Along with this is how she ties this locale to the appropriate elemental power and relates it to her original twist on appropriate fantasy of mythology. Thus, first (for me at least, as these books truly can be read in any order) it was Born of Water's shipwreck in the Baltic and the author's take on mermaids, then, in Born of Earth, the beautiful Ireland and the Fae, and now, in born of Fire, Venezia and the Magi. It's really an impressive achievement, especially since each of these novels mirrors Born of Fire in having a great plot and wonderful lead and supporting characters. That's why, as I noted at the start, reading this book - and the series to date - has been a true pleasure.

From the little I read in the other books of the Origins of Elements, I knew that Saxony was going to have some temper. And indeed, we can wonder if the fire found Saxony or if Saxony found the fire. But one thing for sure, they get along just fine. But as happy as I was to discover the girl I also loved the new characters who appears in this book. Isaia was just adorable and I was actually very curious about Dante. Even if at the end the new intriguing character is Enzo. The friends that Saxony made during her stay in Italy might not always remind her of sweet memories, more something bitter-sweet, but what memories!This time the story was much more mysterious and secretive and I just loved that!This time the power of element came in a different form from the Earth and the Water. But it seems that it still got to deal with an amazing girl as AL Knorr loves to write them.So get cozy next to the fireplace (or the air-conditioning) and start read this. Be careful it’s highly addicting!

This is the second book in a series that focuses on four best friends who spend the summer before their senior year in high school apart - all abroad and secretly learning of their special affinities with a particular element. Each book follows one of the girls on her summer adventure, so the timelines of the books happen concurrently, but they can still be read out of order without much confusion. This is Saxony’s story. She’s spending the summer in Venice, Italy as an au pair to two young boys. Saxony is hoping to have some excitement and meet some good-looking Italian young men. She gets more than she bargained for in both areas.I liked that this was not a retread of Targa’s story but in a different locale. Saxony and Targa have very different personalities and they come into their elemental powers in very different ways. Even the love interest angles weren’t the same. Much like her character, Saxony’s story was not predictable.The book has a conclusion but with enough left to curiosity to make me want to continue reading the series. This was a fun YA read.

I love how Knorr makes me taste, see, and breathe her world. With a chillingly realistic villain and a protagonist who’s a true hero, I couldn’t get enough of Born of Fire. Eagerly awaiting the next Elemental Origins book.

A.L. Knorr has written a great second book in this series. It is about the next girl in the group of four friends. Saxony has an amazing experience in Italy that will change her life forever. One of the things I love about this author is how she makes the unbelievable very believable. I loved the first book very much. I started the second book as soon as I could doubting it could be as good. It was every bit as good, only different. I really can't wait to read a book about the third friend's summer.

This was such a fun book that I can't wait to read the rest of the series. A young girl goes to Italy to take care of a couple of little boys. There she not only gains a power, she learns to be more confident and to control her temper. I felt like I was experiencing Italy through her eyes. I hope to read more about her life being a Fire Magnus and a young girl.

The main character was different in the beginning, from the other series elementals. The author has unfolded an amazing story showing the 'strength' of caring for others; that brings out the best in you, and positively effects others in great and amazing ways. This power is shown to be greater than, and/or compliments the amazing powers of being an elemental. Thank you again. I have read the three other novels of the series. Each one is unique and very exciting. Looking forward to reading the next book coming out soon, Born of Air.

That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.

I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.

I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!

I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.

Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!So get the book, but not this version!!!

First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. For my adult life I struggled with $, debt, bills, etc.While the info contained within this book certainly is no secret, the story spoke to me in a way that nothing else had. Maybe it was the context, language, or the historical time tested theory, I'm not sure but whatever it was, it resonated.I started reading this book a few years ago in a hotel room on Christmas eve.Something about the stories, lessons, and history really spoke to me. I made a commitment and the following year saw me get out of the hamster wheel of debt that I'd been running in since I was 18.... And establish a respectable savings.Some won't appreciate the stories, some may dismiss the lessons as "common sense" (despite the fact that they aren't applying them and are broke.)Other stories, lessons, formats, may speak better to you.... That's fine.But for me,This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.

3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.

This book should be on the summer reading list for every school. I read this when I was younger, and again recently. I read it to my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes a narrative like this is what people need to really understand things. For example, I could say "use money to acquire assets that will make more money, not liabilities or things that just depreciate." But that's just one sentence, and we might all soon forget it. When you take a set of concepts and put it into a story, it gives people a scaffold to hang their understanding on. That's what this book is. It's been around forever, and it is still highly recommended, and there is a good reason for that.As for this edition, I found it to be fine. I wanted the original text, and this met the criteria.

At the end of the 51 day Israeli attack on Gaza in 2014, 2310 Palestinians had been killed, 10,600 wounded, including 3,300 children. 872 homes were totally destroyed or severely damaged, and the homes of 5,005 families were damaged but still inhabitable. 138 schools were damaged or destroyed, 26 hospitals and health facilities were damaged. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 273,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip had been displaced of whom 236,375 (over eleven percent of the Gazan population) were taking shelter in 88 United Nations schools.Palestinian militias shot homemade rockets killing 66 Israeli soldiers, 5 Israeli civilians, including one child, and one Thai citizen in Israel.Al Mezan Center for Human Rights documents that, from 2008 until October 2013, out of 2,269 Palestinians killed by Israel, 911 were killed by drones, most during the 2008-2009 Operation Cast Lead. In the 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense, 143 out of 171 Palestinians killed by Israel were by drone attack.[...]In the 2014 Israeli attack on Gaza, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights documents 497 Palestinians killed by drones, 32 percent of Palestinian deaths. [...]Atef Abu Saif's book about the psychological terror of drones is important as not only Israel, but the United States uses assassin drones. The US assassin drones eat with families in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya and wherever the US decides it should go.

Everyone should read this book. The sentences are achingly beautiful. The subject timely and important.

Not sure five stars is the right way to rate this but anything less would make a mockery of it. It leaves me with so many questions. Those questions are certainly because I am not a resident of Gaza or anything like it. Where I live things are peaceful and full of nature and birds and fresh air and lots of quiet. There are explosions and shots here but they do not scare anyone because they are coming from the various military ranges a few miles away. (I used to shoot at those ranges myself back in the day when I was in the military. So I know no one is allowed to shoot passed the red flags on either side.) Why would anyone live in a place like Gaza when they could live here? Well, so why can't they leave? Why if they could leave would they not want to? Who would want to be associated with a place so constantly under such conditions? 51 days of drones. And bombs. Missiles. And what sense does any of this make? But I also remember well the news we watched and heard during these 51 days and the youtube reports we watched. As I recall, I wondered why anyone in that situation would think it a war they could win and why would anyone launch anything at Israel when the response was so devastating and tragic. Were not the Israelis right to respond to attacks? Were the attackers launching rockets from schools and buildings and farm land so that the devastating attacks destroyed those very places? Were the people in Gaza really allowing such attacks and putting up with the horrors of the responses in the hope that public world wide awareness of this would change the support for Israel? But no, it hasn't. If anything it makes me wonder what psychological tools the Israelis might have that are alternatives. Atef Abu Saif admits to throwing stones when younger and being shot more than once. And imprisoned as well. And yet he earned a PhD and studied abroad. I also notice despite his being there and knowing everyone he describes he says nothing of those attacking Israel as if it did not happen and as if Israel were doing what it did for no reason. The companion book should be read side by side with this to fill in those gaps, but who will write it? At this point, such a glaring gap becomes more obvious with every page. We almost become empathetic with the drone operators who must have been desperate in their attempt to attack those who were attacking Israel before they attacked without killing those walking down the street with groceries to feed their family. Why did Israel strike targets with warning missiles before blowing them up after everyone had a chance to leave the target? This is all so sad. What could bring peace to these warring sides? There is clearly the view that what Israel did to Gaza is a war crime. What would Atef suggest Israel do to continue to live in peace instead of war?

This is a diary of a father living in Gaza City, recording 51 days of war on the city. It's 2014, from 7 July through August 26. He records events in his neighborhood, events with his neighbors and friends, and the reactions of his sons and daughter. His youngest child, Jalla, is a toddler girl growing up not knowing what living in peace means; for his oldest son this is the 4th war. To see children become immune to the constant threat of bombs and mortars and missiles is disconcerting. This constant fear becomes anger and resentment in adults.While he cites the drone attacks by the Israeli Defense Force, there are also missle attacks and bomb droppings by F16s and incessant "talks" between the politicians who rarely agree to anything. Life in Gaza means another day of surviving. Is that gun barage a celebratory shot, or a resumption of war? Hard to tell when one lives in fear all the time. Friends and family move around from apartment to apartment if one house gets blown up to rubble. And while the war is the central focus, one also learns about the drawn-out bureaucracy of rebuilding. Cement is rationed and takes months and years to procure, electricity comes on intermittently, food is always scarce and water is not always potable. Saif mentions things that people living in peace take for granted: calm time with friends and family and a bed to sleep in at night.This is a bittersweet recollection of the summer of 2014, when being with friends, family and enjoying a few World Cup soccer games is what makes living worthwhile. The voice is of despair rather than of hope, and reading this may anger some and disgust others. but it's beautifully told by a man who's lived his whole life just glad to survive another day.

In "Simple Gifts, June Sprigg tells the story of one of America's last Shaker communities--Canterbury Shaker Village, in Canterbury, New Hampshire--during its twilight years, and of its seven remarkable "survivor" women, who were among the last representatives of our longest-lived and best-known communal utopian society. As a college student Sprigg spent a summer among them, and here she gracefully interweaves the narrative of their lives with the broader history of Shakers in America as she shows us how her experiences there affected her own life and opened the door to her creativity. Gleaning information from old records and journals that she pored over that summer and later, Sprigg brings to life the generations of Canterbury Shakers from the eighteenth century to the present--their customs, their architecture, their spirituality. She also explores the social and cultural forces and the internal imperatives and tensions that caused membership to decrease, all of which, by 1972, brought the community to crisis. Really gives a sense of what it was like when the village still had people in it. Hard to get that sense when you visit today and the "village" is gone. I'm glad June Sprigg recorded her experiences in this book.

I was touched by the author's unprepossessing account of her experience. The writing is good and the narrative moves well. I hoped for a little more spiritual depth.

Good Memoir about the Shaker way of life. 1 Star removed for the pace of the book, which I realize based on the life style of the village vs. modern day, how can the author really speed it up. Good read overall though!

Tis book is written in a simple style and with love. It made me long for a simpler time and wishing I could go live in such a time and place.

This told me a lot about ordinary life in a shaker village, I enjoyed it, different than books that just show what the shakers have made.

The late Sterling Seagrave at his best. No one knew more about Southeast Asia than Sterling Seagrave. This is a compelling, highly recommended book of non-fiction that reads like a well written novel.

It could be said that Marcos was before my time. What I knew about him I gleaned as a high school student from watching late night comedy shows featuring quips about Mrs. Marcos (Imelda) and her vast collection of shoes. Cue the applause sign. In my twenties, I got a chance to visit the Philippines and thought I'd bone up on that frequently overlooked country, and that is how I stumbled on this book. There wasn't much applauding. Nor did I laugh. Not even once.The rise and fall of the Marcos dynasty is a fascinating tale; a jaw-dropping account of how incredibly - nay, impossibly - black and deceptive the human heart can be. After coming to power illegaly, Marcos and his entourage of cronies and sycophants spent two decades robbing the struggling Pacific republic absolutely blind. During his reign, the Philippines became a major international player in just about every illicit activity under the sun, i.e. drug running, illegal arms sales, and especially child prostitution. While the underground economy boomed everything else simply ground to a halt and the people languished in poverty and even starvation. Riding on the back of the misery, authoritarianism, and insitutionalized corruption that he helped engender, Ferdinand Marcos became - wait for it - the richest man in all of Asia. Think about that for a moment. And here's the kicker: the US government was his biggest supporter. Indeed, the US would have courted the devil himself in order to garner "moral" and military support for Vietnam and with Marcos they came darned close.Seagrave is an adept narrator and and an expert researcher. From Marcos's rise as a Japanese collaborator to his expulsion under People Power, the author takes us on a dizzying if not mind boggling adventure. This is an excellent read.Troy Parfitt, author

Great historical account, hard to find many worth reading. A bit biased from an American writer with his obvious progressive secular points of view, but still a good, detailed worth reading

Seagrave is a prolific writer of credible width and depth. I read 4 of his books, including "The Marcos Dynasty" with great suspense and expectation. I was not dissapointed. The media does not always report what relevant information we should know. Writers such as Seagrave fill in the meat between the skeletons and give a clearer picture. No political agenda, just facts and details as any writer could research and provide.Forget about Imeldas shoes, this book will describe their lust for power, no respect for their own people, no respect for the common rule of live and let live, no respect for laws of this world. I enjoyed reading Seagraves style, as I know everyone else would.

This is a great book, which I have shared with friends.Warning -- the political behavior which Seagrave documents includes extreme violence and cruelty. A couple of my friends have put it down for that reason.Another of Seagrave's books, "The Soong Dynasty," is even more fascinating. If you like the back-story of history, including family events, CIA covert actions, etc., you'll like "The Marcos Dynasty."

Very enlightening about corruption levels in the Philippines, United States, Japan, China. Wealth, deception and manipulation beyond my imagination. A bit dry here and there but full of information you couldn't dream up if you tried. After this, I'll surely doubt every news story I hear!

Seagrave has a well-documented account on the reign of the Philippine dictator and his cohorts. An eyeopener and interesting read..
