Any review of this book would have to start out by mentioning the fact that it is part of Taschen’s “Basic Art” series. As such it is only 96 pages in length and most of these 96 pages consist of illustrations of the artist’s work. Hence for anyone seeking a deep and profound academic opus, this is not the book to read. It is instead geared to the layman with little knowledge of the artist who desires to get up to speed in about 2 or so hours. For that reader the book rates a solid four star. The book makes amply clear why Matisse’s school was referred to as les Fauves (the wild ones – a reference to his use of vivid colors).The book has many positives. For one, it provides a good overview of the artist’s best and most well known work. The selection of the artist’s work is impressive, especially considering how much the artist has produced. As Matisse has produced in the hundreds of works this was no easy task. Putting together this Taschen edition was not as easy as putting together Taschen books that review, say, Vermeer, Bosch and Bruegel the Elder (these artists only have, give or take, about 40 known paintings).In addition, the illustrations showing Matisse’s work are quite good, especially for a book in the price range of $10-$15. The book also provides a decent biography of the artist as well as how his art evolved over time. The reader learns how, for example, that unlike so many artists Matisse did not start out his life wanting to be an artist but only developed this inclination later in life. He discovered he wanted to become an artist after having surgery and being bed-ridden after having completed his studies to enter the legal profession. Someone had purchased some paints for him to paint with while he was recuperating from surgery and he then “discovered” he wanted to become an artist as opposed to practicing law. With regard to his “style”, it developed along the lines of utilizing more and more color over time albeit the progression was not necessarily linear.There are a few weaknesses, however, the prevent this reviewer from granting this book a five-star rating. One is that it does not cover Matisse’s technique, unlike the better books in the Taschen Basic Art series. For example, in the book on Watteau the reader learns of that artist’s use of thick brush strokes and in that on Vermeer that artist’s use of the camera obscura. With respect to the illustrations, albeit they are quite good for a $10-$15 book, they still do not match those of some of the best illustrated books in Taschen’s Basic Arts series (in particular that on Michelangelo). As a result the factor most unique to Matisse’s work, the bright run-away colors, is not made as clear as it should be.Nevertheless, despite these weaknesses, the book is still highly recommended especially given its price.

I bought this to better understand Matisse's work and his use of color and I wasn't disappointed. I am currently what I would call a representative artist that wants to fully understand abstract impressionist painting and the thinking behind the varied artists. I bought this first and liked it for the essays and the art. I also am reading Diebenkorn, who was an admirer of Matisse and conflicted, it seems, between abstraction and representative art; although he excelled and known for the former, he still found the need to reprise his experience in figurative and landscape art over his lifetime. If you enjoy Matisee, Master of Color is a good book to better understand what he was thinking during some of these times. It isn't a large book so it only gives you a brief look at some of his work in color. Diebenkorn's work during his Berkeley years is far more expansive and enlightening on the subject of abstract impressionism and a compliment to Matisse as well.

Who doesn't love matisse, some nice paintings in here...

The only problem with any of the books in this series the authors are truly in love with the painters' works they are describing, which might slant the analysis of every piece of work. That said I'm not really sure that is too much as looking at these great pieces of art is truly enjoyable and having them expounded on with such enthusiasm is a treat. This book is no exception. If you love Matisse you will not be disappointed.

My grandson, 14 months old, LOVES this little book! I’ve been amazed that he comes back to it every day. He loves to take the lion out and put him back in his ‘cave’! Highly recommend!

I bought this book to read to my daughter's class on St. Patrick's Day. It arrived the day before and I excitedly read through it, but it fell short of my expectations. It had cute and vivid illustrations and included stickers but it didn't seem like a complete storyline, they didn't even use all the Toodles tools! I didn't feel like trying to explain why to a room full of curious 4 year olds so I stuck with a classic and read them Dr. Seuss' Put Me in the Zoo and my daughter brought her coordinating spotted stuffed animal to show and we handed out animal crackers, it was a hit!

This is a cute book and my daughter loved the stickers, but the pages keep falling out. I don't know if I just got a lemon but I thought it was worth mentioning.

My children loved this story! It's the perfect book to add to your St. Patrick's Day library. The story keeps you drawn in and reading for more! The illistrations are very colorful and Intriguing.

Not always easy to find books that fit some of the "minor holidays" so we were happy to read Top o' the Clubhouse on my Kindle. The story isn't too long so it's perfect for bedtime. Basic plot is about Mickey and his friends solving problems with the help of Toodles and a St Patricks day theme. They save the day once again! Happy we downloaded this book and recommend it for your little ones.

My son loves these books, although they are pretty short. They give the first one free.... just like crack or something. A bit on the expensive side.

I found St Patricks Day books were hard to find. I loved how Disney had one. While my 10 month old doesn't understand it at them moment I love having it for future years. For paperbook book the pages are a decent thickness and held up to my little guy 'helping' me turn the pages.

I bought this for my son to give to him on Saint Patrick's Day. This was also another great Disney storyline.

This story is adorable, comes with matching stickers. My toddler and preschooler love it. We read it every day. Highly recommend!

This is a very good book describing what happens to us as we age. Addresses some very complex technologies and science, but does it in a very readable way for those of us who are not medical experts.

If you are interested in the how and why behind aging, Borrowed Time: The Science of How and Why We Age will explain current aging research in an easily understandable manner while opening up a whole new frontier of science to lay readers.Borrowed Time: The Science of How and Why We Age is definitely a popular science book. The definitions of terms and especially acronyms are written in plain English. The science is clearly explained. However, it is the conclusions drawn that are stunning. Experiments in worms have shown it is possible to extend life tenfold. However, it appears that “ageing is the price we pay for protection against cancer.” Unfortunately, many of the proposed aging solutions caused similar issues. Just a note on the worms: the roundworms carried on the space shuttle Columbia for experimentation were the only survivors of the explosion that killed everything else. Some of their descendants were carried eight years later to the International Space Station on the Endeavor.I found this book to be really interesting because I didn’t know anything about how the aging process works or any of the multitude of research projects trying to stop it. I would recommend not talking to your 20-something daughter about the importance of the FOXO gene variant, where you basically won the old age lottery. My daughter’s eyes glazed over sometime during the first sentence. I should have started with the fact that fruit flies share 60% of our genes and the worms mentioned above only share 33%. I just have to give this book 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars! I couldn’t put it down!Thanks to Bloomsbury Sigma and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

In an insightful first two-thirds of the book, Armstrong provides a succinct summary of the key hypotheses associated with ageing. Starting from "pay later theory", free radicals, epigenetic alterations, calorie restriction, stem cell exhaustion, oxidative damage theory and somewhat more recent hypotheses centered on telomerase, tumor suppressors, and recent discoveries from genetic studies are well summarized. For each key school of thought, the key basis, experiments leading to the conclusions, contra-evidence and how it set the stage for the next set of hypotheses are well presented.As one reads through these sections, one can easily grasp not only the sheer complexity of the topic but also how science builds on generations of experimentation. One gets some intriguing information on the role of animal models and experimental methods involving fruit flies, rats, worms, and primates. As the book starts dealing with more deeper topics such as gene mutations, it does assume a basic understanding of genetics.The last few chapters take a much sharper focus on Alzheimers disease - though the transition from the core hypotheses on aging to Alzheimers is somewhat abrupt. But I did find it hopeful to learn that a handful of anti-ageing approaches are potentially useful for our species. For example, with the right political will we might be able to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's from air pollution and smoking. On the medical front, a trial is currently in progress with metformin, currently used as a diabetes medicine, to see whether it is also successful in prolonging the life of non-diabetics. I've read every Jason Reynolds book published (except for the Spiderman one which I'll get to next). This is the most powerful one yet. The poetry is tight, not a word wasted. I found myself reading lines outline over and over to hear them roll off the tongue. The plot is clever and refreshingly different. The message, the voices, the themes are powerful. The whole world should read this tale and learn how violence begets more violence and swallows us up not whole but very broken. I wanted to get in the elevator with Will, hold him like his mother would have, cry with him, and lead him away from the tragic tradition that he felt compelled to continue. Thank you, Jason Reynolds, for your wisdom and the voices you create! The world needs this book. And PLEASE keep writing!

How do you begin to describe Jason Reynolds' Long Way Down? Although some have understandably called this tale a modern retelling of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and to some extent it is, but it is much more than that. Literature teachers will certainly delight in the many lessons that are taught throughout this creative tale, readers are simply drawn in by the delight it is to read. Although there are a few profanities scattered in the telling, they do not draw attention away from the story and in fact, Mr. Reynolds uses them to add appropriate realism to his characters. Written for teens, this novel is enjoyable for both adults and teens, as evident by the fact our entire family read it and have had many animated conversations over dinner on the meaning of the ending. Highly recommend Long Way Down and look forward to reading more of Jason Reynolds in the very near future.

Divided into eight chapeters, this book is packed with great, useful and interesting stuff about Body Language. I like how author looks at it as “another real language”. It was also very interesting to read how your handshake can say a lot about you and how can you read body language. The book is well-written and easy to follow. I find it very helpful for everday use, because we are always surrounded with body language, but we don’t pay much attention to it. By reading this, you can really change the way to look at it, being more analytic and understand people’s emotions better.

This is very important for me as a teacher. I want to know more about how it can affect my students when they attend their first interview. I always tell them that words are not enough. Now I will be able to teach them how to have the best gestures. I can also apply it for myself and get good results from doing it to reading other people's mind. For all I know, body language is more honest than simply listening to words. Thanks to this book for making it possible.

I love this book it can be applied to so many aspects of your life. Through this book i have learned that body language better known as non verbal communication in social science, is the display of an emotion or thought without ever saying a single word. To my surprise i have learned that us humans make major serious life decisions based on the judgments we derive from body language. This book wasn't what I expected and feel the title did not capture what the book was really about. I haven't always been this way, but I have noticed that I have lost confidence in myself over the years. This book has actually helped me gain confidence. Practicing these power poses does help. I have learned to be more confident because of this book and motivating myself to practice these easy steps daily. The book was not lengthy and Mr. Segler gets right to the point on the topic he focuses on without babble. I also found the section of the book that discussed reading other people's body laguage and being able to adjust your own to suit the situation and get the most from your interaction with them.

The tips gained from this book are great for effective communication. As one can learn to be a better public speaker, a better partner, teacher or instructor on reading this book.
