I laughed. I cried. And in the end, I couldn't wait to share with someone else. Beautifully written with a country dialect but with wisdom for the ages. What an absolute joy it was to read, Some Kind of Courage! (I don't write reviews usually, but just had to comment on this wonderful story!)
What a beautiful story! The words of this book touched my soul and brought me to tears more than once. Readers of all ages will get wrapped up in the adventure, the heart-warming love, and the heart-wrenching grief in this tale. Gemeinhart managed to write a powerful coming-of-age story that avoids being trite. corny, or cliche. A genuine treasure that I will share with my kids, my students, and anyone looking for a good read.
That seems like an unlikely adjective for a book, but that is the word that came to me when describing this book. I could also say gripping, meaningful, glorious, enthralling, and they would all fit.The writing is beautiful, and the voice of the main character, Joseph, rings true. This is a love story about a boy and his horse, a boy and his friend, a boy and his mama and papa. A boy with integrity, honor, and a mission.I laughed, I cried, and I didn't want it to end.
Some Kind of Courage is a perfect summer reading book for boys 8-12 years old. It's high adventure, heart stopping scenes, humorous events and challenges any boy would understand. The 12-year-old orphan has courage and honor in the face of betrayal. He leans on the things he learned from his parents to find his way through a long journey to recover his pony. I like this book so much I have already bought a copy for my grandsons in one family and plan to buy another one for the other set in my family. Even if you are not a pre-teen boy, I recommend that you buy a copy and enjoy the story. It's just that good.
I absolutely loved this book! It kept my interest and had me in tears at the end. I am a teacher and this is a required read for my students this year. When I started reading this book, I had no idea this book took place in the area I grew up. I am from Ellensburg, Wa, and was able to envision all the places the main character traveled throughout the book and really enjoyed traveling back in time with the character. I can't wait to read more from this author!
Some Kind of Courage is some kind of story. I loved it. I lived it. I felt it. I believed it. One of the very best. And, I’m an 65 year old habitual reader. I’m adding this book to my personal library. Thank you Dan.
Dan Gemeinhart likes to live dangerously-through his writing! I’m talking truly bad people, bear attacks, and near drowning experiences. His characters lose everything, but manage to win in the end. I loved this one especially because of the pony. 💖
Some Kind of Courage is an exciting middle grade, historical fiction story filled with grizzly bear encounters, white water rapid runs, Native America horse races and an unlikely friendship. It felt a little like True Grit, but for kids. The story does has its fair share of sadness, but the hero is refreshingly decent, kind and true. The ending requires some suspension of disbelief, but it doesn't detract from this poignant story.
