If you look at the map in this book you can easily see that Morocco, a country on the northwest tip of Africa, is separated from Spain by the Strait of Gibraltar by only a few miles. To the southwest is Western Sahara, a desert territory Morocco claims as their own where "only about five hundred thousand people live." Western Sahara would like its independence, but Morocco needs its natural resources and hesitates to grant them their freedom. To the north the country enjoys the coastal beaches of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Inland the terrain varies with plains, mountains, and desert. One of Morocco's most abundant resources is phosphate, an export. Other exports include fish, vegetables and fruits such as tangerines.Morocco is home to a rare tree named the argan. Goats are fans of their leaves and actually "climb up the trunk" of the argan and "stand on the tree branches to eat their tasty snack." You'll see an amazing photograph of these very unusual goats. Morocco is also home to two ethnic groups, the Berber people and the Arabs. Most people in the country are "Muslims and follow the Islamic faith." Moroccans speak Arabic in the darija style, but some still speak Berber languages. Mohammed VI is a king who is the country's leader who wants the best for his people and thinks "that women should be educated and have jobs outside the home if they want." In this book you will also learn where people live, the types of jobs they hold, you'll learn about village life, the importance of family, education, how long children attend school, what people eat, their crafts, music, holidays, and you'll learn many other interesting facts about this interesting country. This is a fascinating overview of Morocco for the young student. This book is well researched and packs a lot of interesting information in its pages. Many vignettes included in the numerous, informative sidebars interspersed throughout the book could easily be a stepping stone to a report or further research. For example they include such topics as rights for women, Ramadan, and the country's two seasons. One of the more interesting sections was about family life and how many relatives could be found in a household. This is one of many in the "Country Explorers" series. This book is generously illustrated with photographs and includes a map. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, information on the flag of Morocco, some fast facts, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This book courtesy of the publisher.
