Amelia Lost: The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart, by Candace Fleming

From Booklist

Drawing on her training as a historian and her considerable writing talents, Fleming (The Great and Only Barnum, 2009) offers a fresh look at this famous aviatrix. Employing dual narratives—straightforward biographical chapters alternating with a chilling recounting of Earhart’s final flight and the search that followed—Fleming seeks to uncover the “history in the hype,” pointing out numerous examples in which Earhart took an active role in mythologizing her own life. While not disparaging Earhart’s achievements, Fleming cites primary sources revealing that Earhart often flew without adequate preparation and that she and her husband, George Putnam, used every opportunity to promote her celebrity, including soliciting funds from sponsors. The use of a gray-tone background for the disappearance chapters successfully differentiates the narratives for younger readers. Frequent sidebars, well-chosen maps, archival documents, and photos further clarify textual references without disturbing the overall narrative flow. Appended with a generous bibliography and detailed source notes, this is a book most libraries will want both for its fascinating story and as an illustration of how research can alter historical perspective. Grades 4-7. --Kay Weisman

Review

Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, January 1, 2011:"Handwritten notes, photos, maps and inquisitive sidebars (What did Earhart eat during flight? Tomato juice and chocolate) complete this impeccably researched, appealing package. A stunning look at an equally stunning lady."Starred Review, The Horn Book Magazine, March/April 2011:"The book’s structure and scope, along with the story’s inherent drama, provide a taut, cinematic backdrop for the history of Earhart’s doomed flight."Starred Review, School Library Journal, March 2011:"Ho-hum history? Not in Fleming’s apt hands. What could be a dry recitation of facts and dates is instead a gripping and suspenseful thriller...This book is splendid. Hand it to everyone."Starred Review, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, March 2011:"Fleming cleverly structures this biography to give the tale of tragedy a fresh and dreadful impact...As a result, this offers not only a provocative introduction to Earhart but also compelling glimpse of what it was like to watch her disappear from the world."

Fleming does a superb job of pulling the reader into Earhart's story. The book is eminently readable and would make a good read-a-loud. Starting with Earhart's idyllic childhood and moving through the difficult years of Amelia's father's alcoholism, the author lets the reader see the forces that shaped the woman that Earhart became. Showing no judgements of Earhart, Fleming simply tells the facts as they are known and leaves the reader to make up his/her own mind about Amelia.Fleming does the seeming impossible by getting the reader so involved in the story that he/she somehow hopes the end of the story will be different than he/she knows it to be. The design of the book is sharp and easy to follow with photographs placed appropriately through out. Sidebars add interesting information about Earhart and the people around her. I highly recommend this book to those who love a good story and a fascinating piece of history.

Really nice book, just not as "adult" as I had expected. Lots of pics and info though.

I got this book for my 11 year old voracious-reader-son after he and I read “The Family Romanov” (by the same author). Both books are so incredibly engaging and bring history to life. Fabulous storyteller, writer, and historian. I wish she could magically produce 30 more books on other aspects of history.

I really like this book, it's very easy to read and understand and the variety of pictures is very informative. I am in the 8th grade and we had to choose a biography book about a person and this is definitely one I can truly say is easy to read. Definitely the best book on Amelia I've seen!

I received Amelia Lost last night and had a hard time putting it down before dinner. A brilliantly written, well-researched biography which debunks the myths while shedding new light on this legendary aviatrix using archival data. Fleming melds the story of Earhart's last flight into the pages of her life, taking the reader on two journeys which ultimately merge at the end. A great gift for any aviation enthusiast, male or female, young or just young at heart.

Spellbinding!I love this book--very well done by the author.I especially enjoyed how Short Wave Listeners heard her pleas for help!A must-read for all lady aviators!

...nothing original but a good compilation of sources. The pictures and concise narrative are great and the author acknowledges some the controversy surrounding Amelia’s disappearance without getting embroiled in the debates.

Great. Reference material for my grandaughter who was doing a report on Amelia Earhart!!

I enjoyed the book, it even includes coupons for many of the places it talks about. I wish it had maps in it, that would have made it a 5-star. A map around the island, a map of el centro, points of interest, hotels, restaurants, etc.

The book is more of a directory than a guide. The most useful item was a 10% off coupon for a rental car from Isis which saved us $50.

Excellent book ! I am planning a move to Cozumel so I particularly enjoyed the " Dining in Cozumel" section of the book. I plan to take full advantage of many of the dining recommendations.

nice tips

I enjoyed the local flavor of this book and would recommend it to others. Also book is small so better for traveling.

Got it for someone else.

This book was very helpful on our visit to Cozumel. It gave a great overview of what to see. do, and expect. i carried it with me the whole trip, which was great!!

Cozumel Complete Guide IIATTENTION- Anyone who has purchased a copy of "Cozumel the Complete Guide II" please note that the coupon for PRIMA'S at El Cantil is no longer valid. Owner is claiming it is a "fake" which is strange because it has been 2 years and never a word from him before. I assure you I asked his permission and that is what he offered. Business must be so bad that he can not afford to allow those cupons anymore!!!The book is NOT cheap..what you may have gotten is someone who printed out from the ebook. My paperback is industry standard." response from the Author! This was a response from the Author ( who cannot even spell the word "coupon" ) to my request to have my restaurant removed from her list, the quality of the coupon looked like something someone would print out on cheap copy paper, and very unprofessional. We have been presented with 1 in however many years she claims to have been in business. We have only been in Cozumel 26 years , so guess we are doing something right. Be like me , go to a place for the food! My staff refused it, as it looked just like something anyone can print on their home computer and then they called me and I offered the clients a 10% disocunt anyway, so their experiance would feel good and they , at least said they would recoup the price they paid. They said we were not the first restaurant that refused it. These should be on a high quality coupon material, numbered and professional looking.Don't waste your money on this, just bring cash and just about every single restaurant in Mexico will give you a 10% discount( the cost of processing credit cards here)

This book is what I consider a "Universal Problem Solver" for its subject, which is how land forces fought World War II in the South Pacific. The battles for Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Solomons have justly passed into legend in the United States and Australia (and New Zealand to a smaller extent) as a turning point of World War II. They were among the harshest battlefield settings of a war that was noted for ghastly scenes of battle -- thick, disease-infested jungles where large bodies of armed men could easily get lost and run into headhunting cannibals.A Japanese general died in a river flood. Hordes of Japanese troops were felled by the deadly combination of the miserable terrain and their inability to supply their men with food and medicine. On Guadalcanal, the American Marines were abandoned soon after they landed, and had to survive on captured Japanese rations for weeks -- even putting the lone Japanese bulldozer to work to finish Henderson Field. The dozer's operator slept by the vehicle with his rifle -- nobody was allowed near him or it.The book is divided into sections: how the battles were fought, the social roots and technological tools of the combatants, how they operated tactically, and how the men thought, felt, and endured their battles. Everything from medical care to machine-guns are covered, with interesting notes about how US Marines created fake Japanese "war flags" to sell to gullible US Sailors that they believed had let them down.A good chunk of the book is how the cultures of the various armies affected how they fought the South Pacific War, which was critical. One point that Professor Bergerud makes is that the US Army had become obsessed with and mastered large-scale logistics -- if Hitler asked American generals to prepare a plan for the invasion of Russia, the answer would have been mind-numbing but critical essays on high-viscosity motor oil and anti-freeze instead of crackling Prussian Generalstab arrows on a map, leading to Leningrad and Moscow. The Americans understood that an army had to be supplied to win.Touched With Fire is a masterly and detailed work, focusing like a laser on the land crucible of the Pacific war. This will tell you nearly everything you will want or need to know about that war, who fought it, how, and why. Highly recommended.

One of the finest accounts of war in the South Pacific around. Not a literal history - there is a good overview of the war i the South pacific but it is really about the three armies that fought the ground war (Australia, Japan, and the US) , how they fought it, and what conditions were like fighting it. Gives a fair account of each Army. Ever see pictures of the war i the South Pacific taken after the initial landings and the men look like animals? There is a reason for that: a truly inhospitable, unforgiving climate and terrain.

The superb account rendered so graphically in this book educates a new generation of readers as to the horrific practical realities involved in the Allied island-hopping strategy employed by the Allies in waging the Pacific campaign during World War Two. Indeed, while the specific individual battles often involved far fewer ground troops and were much smaller in scale than what occurred in the European theater of the war, the ferocity of the opposition and the relative number of casualties were staggering. Thus Eric Bergerud's gripping recounting of the incredible details involved with the war in the South Pacific in "Touched With Fire: The Land War In The South Pacific" reminds us of the terrible costs associated with that campaign. This was truly a campaign requiring a total re-education of the American military involved. Starting with the disastrous lessons of the quite different realities of jungle warfare first experienced on Guadalcanal, the Allied command had to learn to adapt to the extremely tenacious, ingenious, and almost indefatigable efforts of the island's Japanese defenders, who could subsist on a little water and rice and move through the jungles with much great ease and skill than could we. No one was prepared for the sustained levels of ferocity with which the Japanese fought, usually to the death, over these small atolls that they had to recognize they could not hold onto forever. Yet they fought on.The book recounts the many ways in which the war in the Pacific was different from that waged in Europe, and is organized around several themes such as terrain, climate, diseases such as dysentery, etc. in illustrating how the very different negative circumstances surrounding the island hopping strategy affected and constrained our ability (as well as those of the Japanese) to fight effectively in such an environment. Of course, as the author maintains, the Allies learned very quickly; they needed to in order to survive. As so well described in Ronald Spector's "Eagle Against The Sun", the Japanese were incredibly ingenious in devising ways to use topography, indigenous materials, and a willingness to "`rough-it" to build virtually impregnable walls of resistance to the oncoming invaders. This is a very well written, passionately argued, and absolutely entertaining book to read. The author has done a remarkable job in documenting and substantiating his notions and theories, and I found myself surprised at how well some of his more provocative and controversial ideas are supported by the data he employs. This is an eminently worthwhile book, a wonderful addition to the growing library of titles exploring the realities of the war in the Pacific, and one I would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the gritty details of the Allied `island to island' war against the Japanese. Enjoy!

This is truly a great narrative. It gave a large and broad picture of the South Pacific and its challenges, which was helpful for my own much more narrowly-focused research on the same subject matter. I regret that I only became aware of it a short time ago, despite its original publication in the mid-1990s, and this was only by a lucky catch. That's too bad, because there are some remarkable first-person accounts included in the text. It reads fast and is pretty accurate.

As a life long reader of World War II history, particularly of the war in the Pacific, I can safely say that Touched By Fire is one of the best books I have ever read on the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns. I would go as far as to call it a "must read" for any student of the war in the Pacific. I learned things from this book that I never knew before, even after 40 years of reading about the war. Don't miss this one folks.

From the Author

Hafa Adai, that's "hello" in my native language, Chamorro. I've been working on Guam's 1st erotic historical romance novel since 2006, and it is now available on Amazon!Conquered is a passionate love story, as much about its main characters, Guam native Jesi Taimanglo and American GI Johan Landers, as it is about author Paula Quinene's passion for Guam itself. As her characters try to find a place for themselves amid the war, Jesi's relatives, and the Chamorro traditions, Quinene charts a path through a seldom told story: Guam's place in WWII. An original idea written with an original voice that invites readers in to the exotic world ofthe Pacific, complete with coconut trees, banana doughnuts, dolphins swimming in the ocean, and moonlight on Pago Bay, Conquered also recounts the brutal horrors of the Japanese occupation on Guam, a US territory largely forgotten back in the States. In addition to learning about a singular and little-known culture that has played a part in the world wars of the Pacific, readers will undoubtedly crave the recipe for banana doughnuts. --Stacey Donovan, Writer, Editor, and Author of Dive

LVE IT!!! If you have ever been to Guam, USA - where America's day begins; you know about fiestas and village gatherings where everyone brings a dish along with an open spit cooked pig. Chicken keloquin, red rice, and so many delicious dishes; this is an example of what you can expect to be the norm on Guam dinner tables if you have never been to Guam. If you have been to Guam like myself; this brought back so many memories. Excellent book and I do recommend it. I just wished it was more supplied with the various other recipes that are not listed.

Received this Guam cook book today. Very neat to see some of the native recipes in here. It is a little smaller than I anticipated and I thought maybe the cook book would have incorporated stories inside of the natives and culture but it did not. I am originally from Guam, born there because my dad was in the navy. We now live in the United States so this book is a gift for my father for Christmas to remember his time there and the food he ate.we are foodies. Hehe It's nice to have this as a remembrance to where I came from. Excited to try some recipes out! :)

I use this book to make a lot of my Chamorro dishes. I just don't follow the measurements because it really doesn't taste anything like what my cousins make.

Recipes are mostly common recipes found in just about any cookbook. I expected recipes for Chamorro favorites. This was a waste of money for recipes that I can get anywhere. But, I believe that the title is accurate in that there were several references to dishes of Guam. Disappointing!!!

My husband is from Guam, and i really wanted to be able to cook him some dishes from his childhood. He has taught me how to cook a few dishes, but there are some in the booj I can't wait to try. I wish there were pictures though, so that I could compare my finish product to it. That way I can know I was some what on the right track. Lol

I miss the fiestas on GUAM. I was station at Polaris Pt in the Navy. This brings back memories of the fiestas. Thank you Paula.

Great recipes

This book along with it's companion "Remember Guam" makes it possible for anyone who is missing the food on Guam to make authentic Chamorro dishes. I grew up on Guam but have been away for many years and living in an area that has almost no Chamorro people so I haven't had any of the dishes that I so enjoyed living on Guam. Just a few days after getting this book, I had made a little "mini fiesta" at my home and LOVED the results. It also brings me great joy to be able to share these dishes with friends and family who have never had them and see how much they like the food. If you ever lived on Guam, or have visited and wish you knew how to fix all of that fantastic food, buy this book and it's companion and you will be the resident expert! Great job Paula!
