An excellent recourse for someone learning sign language or someone who is fluent in sign language. I speak sign language fluently. I had taken interpreting courses in the process of learning so I could move into interpreting if I chose to. This book is a must have for anyone learning or using sign language. It is an excellent resource. The DVD makes it an invaluable resource. If you cannot quite understand the signing with the pictures alone the DVD provides a person signing the sign. Mac or PC, no problem. If you are using Linux, there may be an issue. The disc only works in a computer, not a DVD drive.
Gallaudet University is topnotch school! But the dictionary leaves a lot to be desired. I was in the certificate program for interpreters, and nearly every word I looked up was not in the book; just simple words.
I'm learning ASL and enjoy watching ASL videos. This book is good but the DVD is even better. But then why am I giving it three stars? They list the 3000 words but you can't scroll up and down using your mouse scroll. You have to press up or down on their screen and it doesn't have a page up or page down. I end up dragging it but it is hard to grab it because it is so small, like a bold line. You can't have it play continuous or random.They took all this time putting together a great visual signing and then the program that runs it is poorly made. The signing is great but its hard to get to it.I also wish Gallaudet would put out some more. So they haven't lost me. Just asking it to be better.
This is considered the best ASL dictonary. I could not survive without it. However, I must constantly supplement it with online words, as the dictionary is far from exhaustive. Then there is the challenge of online inaccurate interpretations. At least everything in this dictonary is accurate.
I bought this during the time I was taking a ASL class in college. A super addition to my textbook and very simple to use. Each sign is accompanied by a word or phrase that explains the sign (ie, once a month, never, happy). Sign pictures are clear and easy to understand. A full vocabulary index in the back of the book makes finding the correct sign quick. The book was accompanied by a DVD, but I've not used that yet- the book itself is very helpful! When trying to find a particular word, I turn to this book before I turn to my textbook!
This is a great dictionary and the CD is the greatest tool! I love how I can type in a word and I can see someone sign it. I sometimes have a hard time figuring it out from just an illistration. Although the illustartions in this book are some of te best I have seen. It would help if it had a description of the sign, but with the CD you really don't hardly even need the book. If you use them together you can learn better how to read the illustrations!!! I would recomend this product to anyone that wants to have a great resource for sign language.
I'm very satisfied that it came in time and not a scratch on cover .looks brand new and the DVD doesn't seem damage nor broken .I'm very happy and can finally use it to practice my sign language.
Showing very well the Signs. Very easy to use. Good quality book with nice pages.
